Leadership and Workforce A AHPM responds to hospice and palliative care workforce shortage needs by ramping up its mentorship and leadership programs, the Certify Now campaign, and the first-ever compensation study for the field. Mentorship For the fourth year, AAHPM provided opportunities for members new to the field to partner with senior mentors through AAHPM’s One-on-One Mentoring and Year-Long Mentoring programs. The severe shortage of hospice and palliative care physicians has made abundantly clear the need for training, and these mentorship programs provide a network to support and grow competent healthcare professionals. Participants of these programs have shared that they found the mentorship “invaluable” and provided a “tremendous source of sup-port and guidance.” Workforce and Midcareer Training Strategy The Leadership and Workforce Strategic Coordinating Committee developed a workforce strategy document to prioritize its initiatives over the next several years. Among the goals highlighted were pro-moting subspecialty board certification, exploring and expanding midcareer train-ing pathways, examining fellowship issues, collecting and reporting data for workforce trends, expanding competency-based clini-cal knowledge, exploring outcomes associ-ated with palliative care, and presenting an accurate picture of palliative medicine. The Leadership and Workforce Strategic Coordinating Committee will continue to work with other AAHPM committees to implement these priorities. Then, I would not let this opportunity pass you by. —Irene Yeh, MD MPH, Year-Long Mentoring participant Certification The Academy’s “Certify Now” campaign continued to impact the field by spread-ing news about certification requirements and grandfathering deadlines. Since 2008, 3,075 physicians have received subspecialty certification in hospice and palliative medi-cine from the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). AAHPM recognizes the importance of increasing the number of certified physicians in the field and has made addressing workforce short-ages a key priority, dedicating resources to promote board review products and courses, test dates, and registration deadlines. AAHPM Physician Compensation and Benefits Survey Responding to members who reported a need for reliable compensation and ben-efits data for physicians working in the field of hospice and palliative medicine, the Academy conducted a comprehensive survey. Nearly 800 physicians provided de-mographic information, details about their work settings and typical workload, and data regarding their earnings and benefits, which contributed to a final product that will help physicians examine their career options and allow employers to make in-formed pay and benefit decisions. Released in summer 2011, the AAHPM Physician Compensation and Benefits Survey—2010 Report is the first survey of its kind to capture the unique nature of hospice and palliative medicine physicians’ work arrangements. 6 | 2011 Progress Report

As part of this research, focus groups were held at the Annual Assembly to understand the needs, interests, satisfaction, and expectations of current academic chief members and to begin to address any gaps.
