MAA E-Books Are Here I have been associated with MAA publishing in several capacities since the early 1970s as a journal editor, founding editor of Math Horizons , Chair of the Committee on Publications, Director of Publications, and Editorial Director of MAA Books. The changes in publishing over that period have been many and often dramatic, but the velocity of change of the last few years with the broader incorporation of digital technology has been breathtaking. Look at the brief histories of digital typesetting systems, TeX, and e-books on Wikipedia to gain an appreciation of the velocity. Amazon began selling the Kindle reader in 2007, and it was the best-known e-book reader up until the release of the iPad in 2010. Today, e-book readers can be purchased from more than a dozen companies. That certainly reflects a growing market for e-books, and in 2011 the MAA will publish its first group of e-books. Of the ten new books featured in this catalog, three are e-books. A small group of titles was selected that seems especially well-suited to benefit readers in e-book format. We are excited about this new venture and very interested in your comments on this first offering of MAA e-books. We expect e-books to be an important add-on to our book publishing program, and not a replace-ment for all paper books. David Pogue, the personal-technology columnist for the New York Times , provides a concise review of challenges facing e-books and e-book readers in his November Techno Files column in Scientific American . He is optimistic that e-book prices will fall, sales will increase, and reader technology will continue to improve, but he sees copy protection as a gnarly problem. The ten new books cover a broad band of topics: randomness and recurrence in dynamical systems, fractals, history, problems, mathematics for secondary school teachers, and more. There is something here for anyone involved with mathematics, so take a few minutes to explore new MAA books and treat yourself to one or two or… You deserve it, for once again you’ve been good. This is my last catalog letter, for on February 28, I will fully retire from the MAA, six months short of 20 years, as an MAA staff member. Since leaving my previous position of Director of Publications in the fall of 2006, I have continued on a half-time basis as Editorial Director of MAA Books from my office at Santa Clara University in California. I have greatly enjoyed working with authors, editors, a great MAA staff, and members who care a lot about THEIR organization. It’s been a wonderful ride. Happy reading, Don Albers Editorial Director, MAA Books CARUS MATHEMATICAL MONOGRAPHS (CARUS MONOGRAPHS) Expositions of mathematical subjects set forth in a manner comprehensible not only to teachers and students specializing in mathematics, but also to scientific workers in other fields. MAA TEXTBOOKS MAA Textbooks cover all levels of the undergraduate curriculum, with a focus on textbooks for upper-division students. They are written by college and university faculty, and are carefully reviewed by an editorial board of teaching faculty in order to ensure superior exposition. The editorial board is especially interested in innovative manuscripts.
