W Southwestern Michigan College Ranked Among Top 10 in Nation for Student Success Student success is at the core of everything we do at Southwestern Michigan College. That achievement is reflected by the grade-point-average (GPA) of our students who have graduated and transferred to universities in Michigan. Nationally, the college is also ranked in the top 10 percent with other community colleges in the country for student course success, according to the 2007 National College Benchmarking Survey. In addition, SMC graduates who transfer to other universities in Michigan have achieved higher grade point averages than their counterparts who began at those schools, as well as students who transferred from other Michigan community colleges. SMC graduates who transferred to Western Michigan University and Ferris State University continue to demonstrate student success. On average, our students who began their education at SMC earned a higher grade-point average at WMU, showing that they consistently outperform transfer students from other institutions, and they consistently outperform students who began their career at WMU. SMC received similar data from Ferris State University (FSU). SMC students who transferred to FSU earned a significantly higher GPA than all other Michigan community college transfer students and FSU students in general.
