Hope College’s more than century old Richardson Romanesque building, designed as a chapel and library, has been restored and transformed into a 21st Century classroom facility. In order to determine the correct methods of renovation and repair, portions of the exterior wall and parapet were dismantled and investigated. From that investigation, the extensive exterior repair methods were determined and ultimately utilized full stone replacement, Dutchman repairs (stone patching) and consolidation techniques. Testing of the existing mortar occurred early in order to determine the correct mix for the stone replacement process and tuck pointing on existing building walls. New sandstone quarried from the same geologic origin as the original was used, in addition to salvaged pieces removed to create new entrances elsewhere on the building. Heavily damaged and originally carved features were repaired by hand by pointing and then were scanned to create electronic models that could be used by the CNC manufacturing process for the new stone replacement.
