Amy P. Abernethy, MD FACP FAAHPM
A palliative medicine physician and medical oncologist at Duke University, Dr. Abernethy is also the co-principal investigator of the Palliative Care Research Cooperative Group and director of a large research program targeting patients’ palliative needs and focusing on symptoms, quality of life, and psychosocial care. Within AAHPM, Dr. Abernethy has served as an elected member of the Board of Directors since 2009 and as chair of the Clinical Education Committee, section editor for the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management (JPSM), and founder and editor-in-chief of PC-FACS, and chair of the Publication and Product Assessment Task Force.

Secretary
Jean S. Kutner, MD MSPH FAAHPM
The founding director and attending physician at the Palliative Care Consult Service at the University of Colorado Hospital, Dr. Kutner is actively involved in student, resident, fellow, and community hospice and palliative medicine educational activities. She established and directs the Population-based Palliative Care Research Network (PoPCRN), a research network of hospice and palliative care organizations. Dr. Kutner previously served as a director at large and has presented at the Annual Assembly every year since 2002.

Treasurer
Solomon Liao, MD FAAHPM
Dr. Liao is director of palliative care services and associate clinical professor at the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Liao serves as the US physician editor for the Hospice and Palliative Care Formulary USA textbook and on the editorial board of JPSM. Dr. Liao is beginning his second term as treasurer of AAHPM, and has also served on many committees, including the Assembly Program Committee, the Education Committee, the Products and Publication Task Force, the Clinical Education Committee, the Awards Committee, and the Work Force Strategy Committee.

Directors at Large
Bruce H. Chamberlain, MD FACP FAAHPM
Dr. Chamberlain has been involved with hospice and palliative care in many ways, serving as a part-time and full-time hospice medical director, a chief medical officer in a national hospice agency and most recently as medical director of palliative care services at the University of Utah Hospital. Dr. Chamberlain has served the Academy as chair of the Education Committee, chair of the Hospice Medical Director course, and a regular presenter at the Hospice Medical Director and Intensive Board Review courses. Currently, he serves on the Governance Committee. This is his second term as director at large.

Daniel Fischberg, MD PhD
Dr. Fischberg is a full-time palliative medicine physician at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. Over the last 10 years his professional activities have centered on the care of patients in the hospital, office, hospice and home settings, teaching, research, legislative advocacy, and public outreach. Dr. Fischberg has served as the Annual Assembly program chair and co-presented the State of the Science for many years. He is an associate editor of PC-FACS, reviewer of JPSM, and chair of the Education & Training SCC.

Sarah Friebert, MD FAAP FAAHPM
Dr. Friebert practices hospice and palliative medicine and pediatric hematology/oncology in her role as the consulting pediatric medical director for Hospice of the Western Reserve. She also directs the Pediatric Palliative Care Division at Akron Children’s Hospital, where she leads the hospital’s ACGMEaccredited Palliative Medicine Fellowship Training program. Dr. Friebert has served on the board since 2009 and has been involved on the Membership and Communities SCC, the Pediatric and Program Chiefs SIGs, the Fellowship Directors’ Forum, and has presented at the Annual Assembly numerous times.

Tara Friedman, MD FAAHPM
Dr. Friedman is the associate national medical director of the VITAS physician group. A fellowship-trained physician, Dr. Friedman has developed a palliative care consultative practice at Hahnemann Hospital, the main teaching affiliate of Drexel University School of Medicine and also lectures on palliative care topics at national meetings. Dr. Friedman is active in the Academy, serving on the Publications Committee and on the editorial board of the AAHPM Quarterly.

Christian Sinclair, MD FAAHPM
In addition to serving as associate medical director at Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care (KCHPC), Dr. Sinclair was involved in the planning of the first inpatient hospice facility in Kansas City, as well as becoming the fellowship director for the joint program between KCHPC and the University of Kansas Medical Center. Dr. Sinclair was a founding member of the Professionals in Training SIG and serves as an active member of the External Awareness Committee and as board liaison to the Membership and Communities SCC. This is his second term as director at large.

Jay Thomas, MD PhD
Dr. Thomas is the Arthur M. Coppola Family Chair of the Department of Supportive Care Medicine at City of Hope. In addition to clinical care, Dr. Thomas’s research deals with ways to control pain and reduce complications of cancer or its treatment that can interfere with quality of life in seriously ill patients. He has written extensively, both in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks. An active member of AAHPM, Dr. Thomas has served as Review Course director, chair of the Scientific Subcommittee for the Annual Assembly, and chair of the Publications Committee. This is his second term as director at large.

Charles Wellman, MD FAAHPM
Since 1999 Dr. Wellman has been chief medical officer at Hospice of the Western Reserve. Dr. Wellman received the prestigious AAHPM Josefina B. Magno Distinguished Hospice Physician Award in 2011 and currently serves as chair of the Leadership and Workforce SCC. He has presented at numerous Annual Assembly meetings on both clinical and ethical topics.

Joanne Wolfe, MD MPH
Dr. Wolfe’s career in hospice and palliative medicine was founded on three key experiences. In 1997, she led the development of the Pediatric Advanced Care Team at Children’s Hospital Boston and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. A few years later, Dr. Wolfe became a faculty scholar with Project Death in America, and then from 2002 to 2008, she was the pediatric medical director for a local hospice. Dr. Wolfe is currently chair of the Research and Quality SCC, a member of the Pediatric and Research SIGs, an associate editor of PC-FACS, and a presenter at numerous Annual Assemblies.
